Toei's 50th anniversary production. An all-star cast portrays the thoughts of Murasaki Shikibu as she wrote The Tale of Genji.
The director is Tonkou Horikawa, known as a director, and this is his first theatrical work. The screenplay is by Akira Hayasaka, who wrote "Peking Man: Who are you?". Cinematography is by Tatsuo Suzuki, who wrote "Nagasaki Burabura Bushi."
The film stars Yoshinaga Sayuri from "Nagasaki Burabura Bushi" and Amami Yuki from "Soft Cheeks."
Winner of the film's awards at the 25th Japan Academy Awards: Best Art Direction, Best Picture, Best Actress (Yoshinaga Sayuri), Best Supporting Actor (Watanabe Ken), Best Supporting Actress (Amami Yuki), Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Lighting, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Music, as well as the 44th Blue Ribbon Award for Best Actress (Amami Yuki).
