The third installment of the original, authentic period drama series presented by the Period Drama Channel to its many period drama fans!
The "Onihei Gaiden" series is a film adaptation of Ikenami Shotaro's short story "Nippon Kaitoden," which is said to be the origin of "Onihei" and is highly regarded as a hidden masterpiece.
January 4th, 1790. There was a small soba restaurant called Sanadaya in Makurabashi, Honjo. In accordance with the custom established by the owner Shobei, every year on January 4th, the restaurant served only Sanadaya soba from Shinshu to its customers. The soba, which was mixed with mouse radish soup, was so spicy that it curved the tongue, and no one who knew about it dared to set foot in. However, by chance, a man visited the restaurant. The man, who looked like the owner of a large store, was nostalgic for the taste that everyone avoided, and ate one bowl of soba after another. Then, when he found out that it could only be enjoyed on January 4th, he simply said, "I'll come again next year," and left. The man appeared again the following year, and the year after that.
As this mysterious exchange between them continues for years, Shobei begins to feel affection for the customer on the fourth day of the New Year. One day, when Kiyozo, an order taker, visits the store, Shobei hears about a tattooed thief who has been pursued by the Arson and Theft Control Bureau for many years, and a hint of doubt crosses Shobei's mind.
Then, on the fourth day of the New Year in the seventh year of the Kansei era, Shobei waited for his guests on that day with a certain resolve in mind.
