    Mineyama, Ikaga

Have you ever wanted to travel back in time to Japan's origin? To see what life used to be like? Such a thing is possible just north of Kyoto, nestled between the mountains and the sea, in a place called Kyotango.

Since ancient times Kyotango has benefited from foreign trade, causing a boom of craftsmen in the Kyotango area, especially in the making of “chirimen”, a fine silk with a dimpled texture. The top range of kimono were made from “Tango chirimen”, and Kyotango became famous for making some of the best chirimen.

But the chirimen craftsmen had a problem, rats posed a threat to their silkworms, so they turned to cats to help protect their supply of chirimen. Now Kyotango is the only place in Japan with “komaneko”, guardian cats, at their shrines.

Even still they stand tall in the shrines of Kyotango next to the god of silk, ever loved by the people of Kyotango.
