This is a historic shrine that is also recorded in the Jinmyocho (list of deities). It is the only shrine in Kinki that enshrines the General of the Four Paths, Tanba Michinushi no Mikoto. It is called Tachimiya (Sword Shrine) because it enshrines the Kunimi no Tsurugi sword, a precious sword that Tanba Michinushi no Mikoto is said to have carried. The main hall is designated as a cultural property of Kyoto Prefecture. In one corner of Kamiya Shrine, there is a huge rock altar, which is thought to be the remains of an ancient solar ritual in which celestial bodies were worshiped as gods, as the angle at which the morning sun rises over Mount Kabuto in the east tells people the best time to do farm work.
