Zenjoji
Zenjoji Temple
During the Edo period, Tango textiles were on the decline due to the highly technical Nishijin. To overcome this recession, Kinuya Saheiji, a weaver from Mineyama, prayed twice to Maitreya Bodhisattva at Zenjoji Temple and went to Nishijin in Kyoto to learn the techniques, which are said to have become the basis of modern Tango crepe. The "shrunk cloth" that Saheiji is said to have first woven was donated to Zenjoji Temple and is still carefully kept as a temple treasure.
