The statue of Empress Masuhito is 3.5m tall, and the statue of Prince Shotoku is 1.5m tall, both bronze statues. The stone pillar behind the mother and child statues is 5.5m tall, and represents the Asuka period. It is thick in the middle, and has the same shape as the pillars at Horyuji Temple in Nara.
It is said that Empress Anahobe no Hashiudo, the mother of Prince Umayado, sought refuge here to escape the conflict between the Soga and Mononobe clans. When she returned to Yamato Province, the Empress bestowed upon her the name, but the villagers, who thought it too dignified to pronounce it, decided to read it as "Taiza" in honor of her departure. A statue of mother and child based on this legend stands overlooking the Sea of Japan.
